West Wittering Beach

The highest water quality and excellent facilities have made West Wittering, southwest of Chichester, one of the premier Blue Flag beaches in the country. The beach is popular with wind and kite surfers and is an obvious venue for lots of general recreational activity. Super dog-friendly Beach Cafe for breakfast and lunches.

Horse racing at Goodwood

One of the south’s loveliest and most famous racecourses rises and falls around a natural amphitheatre, with the horses dashing along the ridge to create one of the greatest spectacles in the racing world. For one week every summer it becomes ‘Glorious Goodwood’ when thousands of punters travel to Sussex to attend one of the most colourful events of the sporting and social calendar.

Goodwood - Motor Racing Festivals

Cowdray Park Polo, Midhurst

Cowdray Park is recognized worldwide as the Home of British Polo. Set below the South Downs within Viscount Cowdray's 16,500-acre estate, the game of polo has been played at Cowdray for nearly a century. On summer afternoons it’s a relaxed way to an enjoy an exciting game in a wonderful setting.

Sea Fishing, Chichester

Out to sea, beyond Chichester Harbour, you can try your hand at sea fishing. There are half- and full-day trips available and there’s even an evening outing for mackerel fishing. Rods, bait and tuition are also provided.

Petworth Antiques Trail

Known as the “Antiques Centre of the South”, Petworth has a long history of being at the heart of antique dealing. This beautiful market town has probably more antique shops than any other in the south of England. Within a mile radius there are over 30 antique and interior design shops to make your mouth water.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum

During the Battle of Britain in 1940, fighter planes took off from the local airfield, now the Aviation Museum houses a wide-ranging collection of relics relating to Tangmere and air warfare in the south-east of England.

Chichester Canal Boat Trips

Chichester Canal is a leisure waterway linking historic Chichester to the sea. The canal runs 4 miles from the Basin to the Harbour at Birdham and, today, the 2 miles as far as Donnington are navigable. Scheduled and charter trips are available throughout the year.

Cycling around Chichester

Whether it’s sleepy coastal inlets and meandering tracks around Chichester Harbour or spectacular, breezy trails across the South Downs, in terms of cycling this delightful corner of West Sussex has something to suit all tastes. For an easy trek over flat terrain, try the 20-mile cycle route between Selsey and Chichester Canal Basin. Ride off-road to the top of the Trundle overlooking Goodwood Racecourse for views to the coast.

Cycling the South Downs Way

Cycling is an excellent way to enjoy the South Downs National Park, with its vast array of wildlife and scenery from rolling hills to sea views and woodlands. The trail is 100 miles long running from Winchester to Eastbourne and takes anywhere from 2 to 4 days for most cyclists and it is advisable to use a mountain bike due to the terrain.
