A glorious road trip through the forest-covered slopes of Trossachs country, the glens and hills around Loch Tay to tree-fringed Loch Tummel and Pitlochry, before exploring the tranquil lochs and glens of the dramatic Cairngorms, the beautiful Spey Valley, where the soft, peaty waters of the Spey supply a host of malt whisky distilleries, and the unspoilt Moray coast with its sandstone cliffs and sandy coves.

Day 1
From Stirling Castle, west to Lake Mentieth, Aberfoyle and Trossachs (A821); Queen Elizabeth Forest Park to Loch Katrine (cruise). A84 north at Kilmahog (Woollen Mill), via Loch Lubnaig, A827 to Killin (Falls of Dochart & Breadalbane Folklore Centre). Loch Tay to Kenmore (detour to Acharn Falls & Crannog Centre). Follow B846 to Loch Tummel. Stay – Inn at Loch Tummel (from £130).
Day 2
Local walk from the inn or climb Schiehallion for fabulous views. West to Kinloch Rannoch and circuit Loch Rannoch; circuit Loch Tummel stopping at famous Queen’s View. Visit Pitlochry (theatre, summer festival, Faskally Wayside Centre); drive Pass of Killiecrankie to Blair Atholl for Blair Castle. RSPB Reserve at Killiecrankie too. Stay – Inn at Loch Tummel (from £130).
Day 3
Back roads north to A9; north Glen Garry to Dalwhinnie (distillery); into Spey Valley to Kingussie (Ruthven Barracks & Insh Marshes); B970 through Spey Valley to Aviemore; detour to Glenmore Forest Park (Loch Morlich); to Loch Garten (RSPB/Ospreys) and Grantown; B9102 into Strathspey, via Ballindarroch Castle. Stay – Craigellachie Hotel (from £150).
Day 4
Walk Speyside Way, mountain bike into the hills, or book ghillie for fishing on Spey. Visit distillery - short drive to Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glen Grant and Cardhu Distilleries (tours & tastings). OR, explore the Moray coastline from Elgin (cathedral; Pluscarden Abbey) to Banff – spectacular cliffs; secluded coves; tiny hamlets & fishing villages. Stay - Craigellachie Hotel (from £150).
