The Itinerary

Day 1

Spend time in York, England's 'eternal' city. a place of outstanding beauty with its history recorded in the streets, buildings and museums gathered around the mighty Minster. Walk city walls (views) and Shambles; visit Jorvik Viking Centre & York Story. Crayke circular walk, if arrive early. STAY - Durham Ox, Crayke, North Yorkshire (from £120).

Day 2

Visit magnificent Castle Howard set in a 1000 acre park (walks); charming Helmsley and the beautiful ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. Or, ride the North York Moors Railway from Pickering through spectacular Newtondale gorge, alighting at Levisham for stunning moorland walk. Day 3

Head east for a taster of the Yorkshire Dales; drive through Bedale (Jervaulx Abbey; Constable Burton Hall) to Leyburn and through Wensleydale to dramatic Aysgarth Falls, Moorland lanes to Castle Bolton then into Swaledale and Richmond (unique town; castle; riverside woodland walk to Easby Abbey). Day 4

Don your boots and enjoy a fabulous circular walk through Teesdale in the morning from the Rose & Crown. Visit the market town of Barnard Castle (castle ruins; independent shops) and the excellent Bowes Museum (art collection in 40 rooms). Take A66 into Cumbria. Day 5

Lake District Drive south to Kendal via Ullswater (Steamer Trip); over the Kirkstone Pass to Ambleside. Visit Rydal Mount & Dove Cottage (Wordsworth), then Hawkshead to Hill Top (Beatrix Potter - NT); ferry to Bowness and a beautiful drive through Winster Valley. Day 6

Visit Kendal (Sizergh Castle) and quirky Kirkby Lonsdale followed by lunch at the Plough at Lupton. Back roads south through the Line Valley, then a stunning drive through the Trough of Bowland to Dunsop Bridge and Whitewell. Day 7

Glorious morning walk from the Inn (Dunsop Bridge circular); then scenic drive via Settle back into Yorkshire Dales, following moorland lanes to Malham Cove (stunning walks); Grassington; Bolton Abbey (riverside ruins); and Skipton (castle).
