The Jack Russell is located in the highlands of Hampshire and this historic, dog-friendly inn offers unpretentious luxury in a tranquil countryside setting. 11 contemporary bedrooms - three in the pub and eight in a bespoke courtyard lodge - are perfectly designed retreats for rest and relaxation, with indulgent touches, such as generously sized walk-in rain showers, espresso machines and super-comfy king-sized beds, designed to make you feel a little spoilt.
The menu focuses on local produce, such as fresh game, lamb and vegetables, all grown on the Faccombe Estate that surrounds The Jack Russell, and the inn generate its own power via a wind turbine, provides water from a bore hole and has a biomass boiler installed to ensure it is as sustainable as possible. Set on an escarpment at the northern-most border of the Hampshire Downs, it is well placed for a walking break - there are several circular walks that begin and end at the front door - or a getaway exploring the region's historic churches, castles and perfectly preserved villages. Downton Abbey buffs may like to visit Highclere Castle, which is just a short drive away.
The Wheatsheaf is tucked down twisting narrow lanes in a hidden valley just 15 minutes south of Bath and perched on a hillside looking across the village, the 16th-century Wheatsheaf at Combe Hay is as pretty as a picture. Admire its cream painted façade adorned in flowers, step inside and be surprised to find a very contemporary-smart interior with whitewashed beams, painted stone walls, statement wallpaper and high-backed Lloyd Loom wicker dining chairs in the stripped-back bar area.
The raised log fire in the old stone fireplace hints at the inn's age, so bag one of the squashy sofas and peruse the papers with a pint. There's local art on the walls, jugs of garden flowers, guidebooks and foodie magazines to read, all adding to a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Outdoors, big benches and cream brollies draw the crowds on sunny days - it's the perfect spot for summer eating, drinking and unwinding.
