Overview

Chawton House Library was once the home of Jane's brother and which the author called the "Great House" in her letters. Today his charming Elizabethan manor house is home to a unique collection of early women's writing. See the table at which Jane Austen dined with her family, along with her brother's portrait, suit and journal, and enjoy a stroll in the Walled Garden built by Edward and mentioned in Jane's letters.

The Library itself is a treasure trove of fascinating works by women - including some of Jane Austen's favourite writers - and many of these are on display throughout the house, along with portraits and paintings inspired by the writers. Chawton House Library serves light lunches and cakes in its tearoom, the atmospheric Old Kitchen in the servants' quarters of the house.

Our literary lovers' package also includes a complimentary copy of one of Austen's newly reissued novels by Vintage Classics and a one-night stay for two people on a shared basis at an idyllic inn deep in the Hampshire countryside, including dinner and breakfast.
