Overview

Situated on the old road between Newcastle and Edinburgh, this former 17th-century coaching inn has been totally transformed into two quirky and very distinct venues - a gastropub-with-rooms and fabulous hotel and wedding venue next door.

Whilst Le Petit Chateau focuses on weddings with a uniquely styled celebratory chapel, opulent rooms and an exotic Mediterranean garden, the William de Percy has been reinvented as a chic, boutique inn offering good food, eight fun and very indulgent bedrooms, and a French-boudoir vibe throughout. In typical French style, the bar entrance is signed 'The Crêperie'.

Here you'll find a quirky bar-cum-dining area that blends the traditional with the more unusual, think stone-flagged floors and exposed brick meets bold upholstered seating, dark painted walls, ornate mirrors and glass chandeliers. There's a great copper-topped bar serving local ales and an eye-catching selection of gins, whiskies and brandies, not to mention the list of interesting cocktails. With great walking in Kielder Forest, plus the National Trust property Cragside within easy reach, the gorgeous inn and hotel are well worth finding.

Rooms

The eight hugely individual boutique bedrooms are designed to help guests instantly relax and unwind, effortlessly marrying contemporary style with original features. All are flamboyant, super indulgent and seriously jaw-dropping. Equally opulent are the 30 luxury rooms in Le Petit Chateau next door.

Expect antler chandeliers, low-slung French beds topped with the softest linen and down, brick and panelled walls, period feature fireplaces, dark brooding colours, ornate mirrors, antique French furniture, big quirky lamps and subdued lighting. Retro phones, smart TVs, fluffy bathrobes and slippers all add to the luxurious feel.

Grande rooms have plenty of space, plus a couple have room for a copper bath by the bed, whilst petite rooms are intimate, cosy and wonderfully quirky. All have super bathrooms, some with freestanding copper baths and ornately tiled walk-in monsoon showers, contemporary basins and plenty of posh lotions and potions. A royal blue theme runs throughout each room.

Restaurant & bar

There's something for everyone on the crowd pleasing all-day menu. Expect simple, honest cooking, delicious pub food served in generous portions and prepared using the best local ingredients available.

Enjoy a sandwich, stottie or even a crêpe ploughman's for lunch, or linger longer over a three course meal. Main dishes range from confit duck leg cassoulet to braised ox cheek with crispy kale, fish and chips, and rib-eye steak with proper chips and peppercorn sauce. On Sundays, tuck into roast Northumbrian topside of beef with all the trimmings.

Cask beers are also very local, including Alnwick Brewery St Mary's ale and Mordue ales brewed in Newcastle. Gin-lovers have 23 gins to choose from. Why not try Lindisfarne Gin with local Marlish tonic water. Minerals and soft drinks are also local, supplied by Fentimans of Hexham. The Corney & Barrow list of wines includes 10 by the glass.

Things to do

A short hop away you'll find Hexham Farmer's Market, taking place every second and fourth Saturday of the month. This long-established market in the heart of Hexham features producers from within a 50-mile radius of the town. Stock up on locally-reared meat, vegetables, bread, cakes, cheese, preserves, trout and smoked products.

You're an hour away from Alnwick Castle here - and it's well worth the scenic drive. A majestic sprawling medieval pile that is a fabulous day out for the whole family. Take a tour, explore the state-rooms or take your kids to broomstick training on the very spot where Harry Potter had his first flying lesson in the film of The Philosopher's Stone!

If it's a fun adventure-filled day out you're looking for, then head for Kielder Forest. Kielder Water is Britain's biggest man-made lake, set within the 250 square miles of England's largest working forest. Amongst a whole range of great activities for both adults and children, are fishing, birdwatching and geocaching.
