Overview

The epitome of the luxury 'glamping experience' is the best way to describe these luxurious and colourful Shepherd's Huts set in a private paddock opposite the Merry Harriers pub.

Hidden away down lanes in a sleepy village deep in the scenic Surrey Hills, the tiled-hung pub is a rural gem, oozing character and traditional 16th-century charm. The five shepherds huts are cosy, stylish and packed with luxuries reminiscent of a hotel suite. They are peacefully set beside a sparkling pond overlooking horse-dotted fields.

Amble across the lane and step into the classic Village Bar to find a crackling fire in the huge inglenook, bare boards, beams and timbered walls, and scrubbed tables topped with church candles and fresh flowers. The atmosphere is cosy and friendly, so expect to see dogs dozing by the fire and locals chatting over pints at the bar.

There's a flower-filled garden and llamas in a paddock behind the pub - book one of the Llama Picnic Treks and explore the Surrey Hills.

Restaurant & bar

Across the lane at the pub, seasonal menus deliver heart-warming traditional pub favourites alongside lazy Sunday roast lunches, sharing platters and more creative daily specials on the chalkboard.

Typically tuck into the likes of ham, egg and chips, steak, leek, stilton and red wine pie, seafood linguine, and 45-day aged sirloin steak with all the trimmings. Ingredients are sourced within 15 miles of the pub and the chefs forage for seasonal fruit and wild garlic.

The local theme continues at the bar with real ales from Surrey brewers (Hogs Back; Surrey Hills; Pilgrim), wines from Surrey vineyards and home-pressed cider from village apples.

Things to do

For something a little different, perhaps a little eccentric and a truly original lifetime experience, why not book one of the Llama Picnic Treks from the inn, perhaps a summer evening or a winter morning trek along the Greensand Way into the beautiful Surrey Hills.

Bring your bike or your walking boots as there are miles of country lanes and footpaths to explore from the inn's front door. Pick up (or download) the excellent walking/cycle route guide from the inn and enjoy the peaceful lanes. bridleways and footpaths that criss-cross the Surrey Hills landscape. The Merry Harriers has also teamed up with Surrey Hills Cycles in Hambledon where you can hire bikes and arrange guided cycling experiences.

Next door to the inn is Coal Yard Creatives, a community of artisan producers/makers in a series of small workshops - gin distillery (tours & tastings), plus a pottery and bespoke joinery, upholstery, bakery and jewellery businesses.

North of Guildford is a tranquil world of unusual plants and beautiful flowers. In the care of the Royal Horticultural Society, Wisley's mission is to share with its many visitors the best in gardening. Wisley may be a peaceful oasis but there's always plenty going on - from world-class flower shows to ground breaking, green-roof research.
