Overview

The classily refurbished Fox Inn by the green and pond in pretty Willian (just minutes from the A1) is part of the Nye family's thriving Anglian Country Inns portfolio of pubs - see entries for White Horse and Kings Head in Norfolk.

The 18th-century inn is both a quintessential local boozer and a popular dining destination, offering delicious modern British cooking and crowd-pleasing menus championing pub classics, fresh fish dishes and delicious roasts. Expect a cool and contemporary feel throughout the spruced up bar and the light and airy dining room, which has a conservatory extension that is ideal for private parties.

Eight country-smart rooms created in the former post office next door are the icing on the cake. They are beautifully kitted out and include dog-friendly Garden Rooms with their own terraces overlooking the parish church.

Rooms

With very few good places to stay locally, the Nye's decision to buy the adjoining post office was an inspired one. Not only have they preserved the amenity for the village, it allowed them to add eight rooms to the business.

The result is impressive; all are country-smart in look and feel, with contemporary furnishings and quirky detail touches; note the striking butterfly and animal wall coverings and the modern wooden bedheads, for example. All are very comfortable with big cosy beds topped with quality linen and vibrant throws and cushions, high-spec TVs, digital radios and spotless tiled bathrooms with walk-in showers.

The triple-aspect room at the top has a roll top tub in the room (soak and watch the TV), while the five chalet-style Garden Rooms (away from the village road) have private terraces and they are ideal for those travelling with their canine chums. The Fox English breakfast will really set you up for the day.

Restaurant & bar

The Fox has certainly nurtured its fine reputation for being the best 'gastropub' for miles around with their menus offering something for everyone.

Showcasing the best regional ingredients, dishes range from imaginative lunchtime sandwiches, exciting pub classics with a twist to more sophisticated dishes on the evening carte. Meats are sourced from local farms - roast 28-day aged beef from Woodview Farm for Sunday lunch - and the fresh seafood comes straight from the Norfolk coast.

The Fox may thrive off its foodie reputation, but it remains a true local boozer with a relaxed vibe in the spacious bar. You'll find five top-quality ales and lagers on tap, including Adnams Southwold, Woodforde's Wherry and changing guest ales. There's a shelf of boutique gins, a good range of juices and soft drinks, and a good global list of wines (22 by the glass).
Things to do

Hitchin Lavender, a family run flower farm nearby, offers 30 acres of exploration, acres of sunflowers, wild flower meadows and beautiful Lavender fields in the summer months and is one of Hertfordshire's most scenic spots. You can picnic here and is a fabulous spot to take photographs across the gentle rolling slopes of Wilbury Hills.

When in this part of the world, don't miss a day out in the historic city of Cambridge. One of Britain's finest cities and a world-famous seat of learning, Cambridge lies on the River Cam. University colleges include King's, noted for its choir and splendid Gothic chapel, and Trinity, established by Henry VIII.
